Career Training Programmes

Horse Knowledge Care and Riding Stage 1

bhsstage1Taking our exam training is a great way of improving your equine skills and knowledge and gaining recognised qualifications. We provide comprehensive training which covers this exam in full. 

This training course will provide you with the competencies to apply basic principles of horse care.

Working under supervision, you will have basic knowledge and practice of looking after a well-mannered horse in the stable and at grass. You will be capable of riding an experienced horse or pony in an enclosed space.

  • Provide a benchmark standard to future employers

Course Objectives

To provide you with the vital skills for a successful equestrian career leading on to the sought-after and well paid employment opportunities. To provide you with knowledge necessary to own and care for a horse or pony.

Unit 1 : Handling, Grooming, Foot and Shoeing, Clothing, Saddlery

Unit 2 : Horse Husbandary, Anatomy and Handling, Health and Safety

Unit 3 : Basic Principles of Health, Safety and Welfare working with horses. Horse Health, Horse Behaviour, Grassland Care, Watering and Feeding

The next step:

When you have achieved the Stage 1 Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding Certificate you will be able to progress to BHS Stage 2 Certificate in Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding. The Stage 1 certificate is recognised in its own right and provides a benchmark standard to employers. It is also a component part of The British Horse Society Assistant Instructor Certificate.

 

Horse Knowledge Care and Riding Stage 2

bhsstage2This qualification will provide you with competencies to apply general principles for the management of horses’ health and well being. Working under regular but not constant supervision, you will be able to care for stabled and grass-kept horses during all seasons of the year. You will be able to ride an experienced horse or pony in the open as well as in a manège or indoor school.

You must be at least 16 years old and have completed BHS Stage 1 to take this training. Before entering the riding section you must also have completed your BHS Riding and Road Safety Test.

When you achieve the Stage 2 Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding Certificate you will be able to progress to BHS Stage 3 Certificate in Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding. The Stage 2 Care Certificate is also recognised as a qualification in its own right and is a technical certificate for the Equine Apprenticeship. The Horse Knowledge & Riding Stage 2 is a prerequisite for the BHS Preliminary Teaching Test and is a component part of the BHS Assistant Instructor Certificate.

Course Objectives

Unit 1a : Groom, Plait and Fit Equipment
Unit 1b : Fit, remove and maintain tack for exercise

Unit 2a : Horse Health and Anatomy
Unit 2b : Shoeing, Clipping and Trimming Horses

Unit 3a : Watering, Feeding and Fittening Horses
Unit 3b : Stabling and Grassland Care for Horses

 

Riding and Road Safety Training

This training is excellent for any rider that may at any time ride on or near the road. Riding and Road Safety is required for BHS Stage 2 exams and for BHS Equestrian Tourism Exams. It is also the only riding test that could save your life and that of your horse.

• Taught Theory with Questions & Answers
• Practice riding a simulated road route
• Practice riding on the road

Preliminary Teaching Test (PTT) Training

Coaching can be a very rewarding and fulfilling career. Coolmine Equestrian Centre offers training and guidance for PTT Candidates who wish to enhance their career opportunities within the equine industry. The BHS PTT exam is run by the British Horse Society, who offer a range of high quality coaching/teaching qualifications encouraging development and progression.

• Presentation Skills, Preparation & Practise
• The development of horse and rider combinations
• Mental preparation of rider for competitions
• Developing and implementing training programmes
• Goal setting
